The Situation:
A medium-sized family-run business in the finance sector faced a unique challenge as it grew while aiming to preserve its original values. They had a long-time senior staff member who was given a highly autonomous advisory role as he neared retirement. Although well-intended, this move led the staff member to feel disconnected and aimless. He had autonomy and competence in spades, but his role lacked a sense of purpose and connection to the team and the organisation. As a result, he felt his skills were no longer needed, and his impact in the business was minimal.
What They Did:
Working with this partner, we implemented a focused 1:1 leadership coaching program tailored to his unique situation. Through coaching, we helped him rediscover his value within the organisation and identify new ways he could contribute meaningfully within the container of his role. This included aligning his role with the company’s larger goals and higher purpose, and clarifying how his expertise could be better leveraged during this transition phase.
The Impact it Made:
The impact was significant on multiple fronts. The team member felt a renewed sense of purpose and engagement with the organisation, boosting his performance and satisfaction. As he worked through the goals in his plan, his improved morale had a positive ripple effect within the team, who had noticed his low mood and felt concerned for him. The change helped to fortify the organisation’s commitment to preserving its family values in a period of growth. The organisation also implemented the 1:1 coaching approach for other team members, seeing it as a way to help team members fully realise their potential in meaningful ways.
