The Doctor is in, and he’s prescribing Mattering.

Did you know that feeling like you Matter at work can make a HUGE difference in your overall happiness and wellbeing? It's true.

In fact, the US Surgeon General’s Health Framework has included Mattering as a key component in their recommendations for building healthy workplaces.

So, what is Mattering? Mattering is the belief that we’re a significant part of the world around us.

Psychologists and sociologists find that mattering arises from two primary experiences: feeling valued by those around us, and adding value to those around us.

The New Workplace Mental Health and Wellbeing Framework

Create Mattering is a practice from Modern People co-creator and Mattering expert Zach Mercurio, Ph.D. We are the only Certified Mattering practitioners in the world.

So why does Mattering make such a big difference?

When we feel like we Matter, we're more likely to be engaged, motivated, and fulfilled by our work. We also tend to work better with others, and share our skills and knowledge more readily.

Research has shown that Mattering is linked to all sorts of positive outcomes, like better mental and physical health, more self-belief, and more love for your job. So, it's not just a warm and fuzzy feeling, it's a fully-fledged intervention for a disconnected team or culture.

So, how can we make sure that everyone feels they Matter at work?

The simplest way is to join our Mattering at Work program. It’s a three-part masterclass for teams and groups.

Other simple ways you can bring Mattering to work are…

  1. Recognising and appreciating each other's contributions. Whether it's through formal recognition programs or just a quick shout-out in a team meeting, it's important to show each other that we value what we bring to the table.

  2. Coming together as a team more. When we rely on each other and work collaboratively on projects, we're more likely to feel like our contributions are important and that we're making a difference.

  3. Finally, giving people opportunities for growth and development. When we feel like we're learning and growing, we're more likely to feel like our contributions matter and that we're making progress towards our goals.

So, there you have it! Feeling like you Matter at work isn't just a nice-to-have, it's essential for our overall wellbeing.
